I have great news to report today.
Oklahoma Governor Mary Fallin has signed into law Senate Bill 398. The bill carried two amendments put forth by Bill Bartmann, the CEO of our primary collection agency, who is on a mission to reform the collection industry. These amendments now make it illegal to threaten a lawsuit once the statute of limitations has expired and will also make it illegal to use profanity in a collection call.
“I was pleased to add this language to my bill to end abusive practices that some debt collectors have been using on law abiding citizens in our state,” said Oklahoma Senator Gary Stanislawski, who worked with Bartmann to craft the language.
It’s hard to believe that those things were not already illegal in the state but it illustrates why the collection industry is in dire need of reform. This may be the first time in history that a debt collector championed legislation that would protect consumers.
If you have not joined Bill’s campaign to reform the debt collection industry you can do so today. Just sign the petition at www.stopthesecriminals.com.
