Imagine a state trooper showing up at your home at 11pm to get you out of bed to take you to jail for a past due debt. This is exactly what happened to Lisa Lindsey of Herrin Illinois.
While battling breast cancer, Ms. Lindsey had paid all but $280 on her medical bill. After missing payments, police showed up at her house one night and arrested her.
“They proceeded to let me get dressed as long as they watched. I got dressed, got handcuffed, got put in the front seat of the police car because he said he would at least do that with my neighbors watching. He took me to the Williamson County Jail,” cried Lindsey.
While it’s illegal to jail a person based on their debt in certain states, creditors seem to have found a way to get it done anyway…and they’re using your tax dollars to do it!
Watch this video of a hearing held this past Wednesday and see exactly the kind of unethical treatment of debtors we are trying to get rid of.
